Dr.Shelly Batra is a renowned Medical Specialist who carried out free surgeries for the underprivileged for more than a decade. In 2005 she combined her medical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to start Operation ASHA to deliver high-quality healthcare services to the poorest of the poor in slums, villages, and tribal areas. Shelly chose Tuberculosis (TB) as her focus because it is the biggest health crisis in the world. It is a curable disease that has become a global pandemic and leads to great suffering, social injustice, deaths and economic loss. It is estimated that the world will lose $3.4 trillion in the next decade because of TB. Operation ASHA has a low cost, scalable and replicable “doorstep delivery” model for TB detection & treatment. Disadvantaged people from local communities are trained as TB workers, who carry out case detection, education, and counselling, to ensure that patients complete the full 6-month long treatment.
